Technical Skill and Tactical Planning Recommendations by Level

We believe that by providing an environment where students are exposed to three critical areas of tennis development, Coaching, Playing and Advancing, they will be connected and become stronger players, have more fun, and stay in the game for life! Each level has a minimum of five (5) benchmarks that a player must achieve before participation in an event.

•    RED Level -  36-Foot Court - Starters / Entry Level Players (Ages 5 and Up)

Programming:  Your child will be introduced this "STARTERS" program, a level which is for the RED Level player who is learning the game of tennis and can send and return the ball. Coaches are working with their players to be able rally over the net and use forehands and backhands. The focus is on the player beginning the match play by using a drop-hit or under hand serve.


PRACTICE - PRACTICE and more PRACTICE
* Forehand - Drop hit - Send to targets, send with accuracy
* Backhand - Drop hit - Send over the net to Zone
* Starting - Drop hit - to player with forehand or under hand serve to partner
Goal: Preparation for rally exchange with partner 


Match Play Criteria: Rally the ball over the net with another player 5 or more times ( Not with a coach or higher level player). Player can drop-hit or serve underhand to start the point. Rally with forehand and backhand during point play. Can keep score and know how to make line calls in or out. Should be able to focus for 10 -15 minutes during match play. Ages 5 and up. Matches are started by sending the ball over the net and the opponent returns the ball over the net. The Ball must cross the net twice to begin the point.


Move Up Criteria:
*    Cooperative Partner Rally – 8-10 times -Ball exchange including forehand and backhand strokes
*    Serve overhand to serve area in, aiming to both deuce and ad courts, 2 tries
*    Control the ball within the 36 foot court

•   RED Level -  36-Foot Court - Players with Some Tennis Experience (Ages 5 and Up) 

Programming:  Your child will be introduced to the game of tennis on a 36-foot court, and will build their skills through progressions of the simple strokes in tennis. Lessons are centered around game-based activities in a positive environment. The focus is on Receiving, Sending, Serving, and Scoring.


SIMPLE STROKES
* Forehand
* Backhand
* Serving
* Volleying
* Movement: Agility, Balance, Coordination
* Scoring Points, In / Out Calls
*  How to Play the Game
Goal:  Preparation for Singles Match play ** Rally, Serve, and Score on 36-foot court**    


Match Play Criteria:  Serve 5 of 10 balls in, deliberately aiming to both sides of the court. Partner Rally 8 - 10 ball exchange. Able to play and score points with another player. Receive and respond to serves. Able to focus and play for 10 - 15 minutes. Match is a 7-point tiebreaker – first to 7 points wins.


Move Up Criteria:   Players should be able to perform the following skills and have their coach verify.

*    Cooperative Partner Rally – 30-Ball exchange including forehand and backhand strokes
*    Serve 7 out of 10 balls in, aiming to both deuce and ad courts, 2 tries
*    Control and Send the ball to the open court and to three zones/lanes
*    Place volleys to the open court and hit overhead shots
*    Tactics: Play with control, able to make decisions, shot selection, use the open court
*    Appropriate age and height - Coach approval required

 •    ORANGE Level -  60-Foot Court

Programming:  Your child will be introduced to the game of tennis on a 60-foot court, and will build their skills through advanced stroke progressions, including use of topspin and underspin.Court management and tactics will be introduced. The focus will be on serving, proper swing path, and athletic development.


GAME STRATEGY and SHOT MAKING
* Consistency - Ball Control- Height, Direction, Depth, Spin, and Speed
* Anticipation, Reaction, and Recovery
* Stroke Refinement - Beginning to End
* Use of Spin and Shot Making
* Transition to the Net - Agility, Balance, Coordination, Speed
* Competition - Game Scoring - Offense and Defense  
* Movement - Court Coverage and Strategic Positioning 
* Develop the Doubles Game
Goal:  Preparation for Singles and Doubles Match play on a 60-foot court

 

Match Play Criteria:
 Serve 7 of 10 balls in, aiming to both sides of the court. Cooperative Partner Rally 25-ball exchange. Able to play and score points with another player, receive and respond to serves. Focus for 10- 20 minutes. Match is 10-point tiebreaker - First to 10 points wins.


Move Up Criteria:   Players should be able to perform the following skills and have their coach verify

*    Partner Rally - 20 Ball exchange with Green Balls on 60’ court, including forehand and backhand strokes
*    Serve 5 out of 10 Green balls in, from 60’ baseline, aiming to both deuce and ad courts
*    Demonstrate the ability to cover the court from side to side & baseline to net
*    Control and Send the ball to the open court and to various zones 
*    Place volleys to the open court and hit overhead shots
*    Must score at least 60% or higher on Player Skill report
*    Tactics: Play with control, able to make decisions, shot selection, use the open court
*    Appropriate age and height - Coach approval required

•    GREEN Level -  78-Foot Court

Programming:  Your child will be introduced to the game of tennis on a 78-foot court. Court management, player style, physical, mental, and social skills will be developed. The focus will be on holding serve, specialty shots, decision making, and increased athletic development.


THE TOTAL GAME
* Consistency - Ball Control- Shot Selections: DNA - Defend, Neutralize, and Attack
* Developing various shots as weapons
* Identify opponent’s weakness and learn how to work the point
*  Use various serves and return of serve to set up and gain control of the point
* Learn how to use Slice, Chip, touch shots, and offensive lobs
*  Advanced Movement- Court Coverage, Strategic positioning, and recovery on a big court with the faster ball
*  Learn how to play doubles, court positioning, using angles
*  Athletic development - increase strength, balance, coordination, speed, and agility
​* Manage adolescent development- Pre and Post puberty  
​Goal:  Preparation for Singles and Doubles Match play on a 78-foot court


Match Play Criteria:  Serve 7 of 10 balls in, aiming to both sides of the court. Partner Rally 50-ball exchange. Able to receive and return serves. Focus for 10 -20 minutes.  Match is a 10-point tiebreaker - First to 10 points.


Move Up Criteria:   Players should be able to perform the following skills and have their coach verify.
*    Partner Rally – 50-Ball exchange with Yellow Ball including forehand and backhand strokes
*    Serve 5 out of 10 Yellow balls in, aiming to both deuce and ad courts
*    Demonstrate how to neutralize points and take control of point
*    Control and Send the ball to the open court using topspin and slice
*    Place volleys to the open court and hit overhead shots
*    Show excellent sportsmanship, court etiquette, and become a mentor to other students
*   Must score at least 60% or higher on Player Skill report
*    Tactics: Play with control, able to make decisions, shot selection, use the open court
